NATIONAL SHOW ROLLER ASSOCIATION
QUARTERLY BULLETIN June 6, 2009
GREETING FROM THE CHAIRMAN
DON HUMPHRESS
If you are on this web page then I guess you would be interested in who is the NSRA. We are mostly a bunch of southern gentleman who get together and have shows. Promoting friendships to be made thought the showing the America Show Roller. We encourage anyone who wants to belong to our club to join wherever you may reside. Our aim or goal is to have a little fun with our show rollers. Our membership is growing and we do have members all over. I think I heard Jim Meeks say the other day that we are about fifty-fifty on members from the south and the north.
I can hear you asking, if you're a southern club why do you call yourself the National Show Roller Club? It's simply because it was founded to go National in the founder's day of Ed Emerson. Ed has long since left the show roller hobby and moved on to racing pigeons. The club struggled to exist for a number of years after his departure. Tireless efforts of Sam Wesley (who incidentally sales tires for a living) and Raymond Craft (They both live in the South) we now have what we have in this club. These two are the patriarchs of the club and we hold them in high regard so don't say anything bad about them around me but only positive remarks are accepted.
Several of us in office go pretty far back in the hobby. Some of us were around when you flew your birds for performance and took them out of the kit to show them. The show roller hobby was must bigger then than it is today. Lots of guys just got old and flew away. Other people just performance rollers only. We do have some members that do both. We are seeing guys who where young back then in the seventies are coming back into the hobby. We are welcoming some new people into the hobby also and I will go on record and say if you're a newcomer we will help you get some good birds. Maybe even some free ones if you are serious about becoming a member and showing with us. So that is who we are, just a bunch of guys who like to have fun with our pigeon buddies and showing show rollers against one another. I would be willing to say we are really not that much different than yourself.
The NSRA stands for something, I just can't think of anything right now. I know we stand for honesty and fairness in the showing of our birds. We stand for equal entry fees for both the young and old, rich or poor. We purpose to get along with one another no matter how much we dislike each others at times. We purpose to not fight all the time and we have the Olson rule, which is you can only stay mad for a certain length of time and then you have to get over it. I think it is only two years you can stay mad.
We stand to have a wonderful fun show in the south each year. We really want to build the south up because if we don't nobody else will come to our rescue. Ft. Payne, Ala has been the place for the NSRA all-age show in recent years. It is also an all breed show. There were about 800 total pigeons of several different breeds there last year including our baldhead and regular show rollers. We will also have our annual club meeting there or at the Classic each year. We will have auction birds. That is one thing we stand for which is getting some good birds in people's hands without it costing them an arm and a leg. Helping others get in on the fun competing aspect of raising show rollers.
We stand and support the NSRA CLASSIC each year, It just happens to be the one show that I enjoy the most each year. It's the only show that tries to level the playing fields at a show by only letting each breeder show a max of ten birds. No paper entry but good food and drink and nice awards.
Classic cups we call them and the first three have money in them. Which goes to three different breeders. The color classes have a ten dollars bill in each of them and you can win as many as your birds will let you take home. I think the Classic is the one unique show that makes us stand out in the hobby and it is open to everyone, member or not, just pay your entry and bring your birds the last weekend in January each year.
Recently, the Classic has been held in my hometown of Campbellsville, Ky. It's in the heart of Kentucky and is a small town. We do have a super Wal-Mart and a Burger King. Which reminds me; we stand for and support the NYBS in Louisville each year. We voted to co-sponsor the show with the original host MSRC this year at our annual meeting. We realize the important of being a part of major show in hobby of pigeon breeders. You will see more fanciers at the NYBS each year than the total rest of the show season. It is a reunion of sorts each year for some of us in the pigeon hobby.
I would also like to think that we stand for the showing of all colors of birds. Some members in the club are putting their own money on some color birds to help promote the raising and showing of these birds. I personally would like to see us with more better different color birds than them common looking blue check self's you see everywhere in the wild as a top color. I say raise more torte shell's or reds or yellow or browns. Move away from the blue check self and keep on smiling as you go along.
We stand for enjoying the time and money it take to keep pigeons nowadays. What I really mean is just enjoy the raising of our show rollers and the different personalities of each bird. We have a playful bird that other fancier's have no idea how much fun our show rollers are to handle. We get to enjoy in them year round and we can take them for granted. Have fun with them at home and let the showing of them be the icing on the cake.
I hope this greeting is enough to give you a feeling of what the club and chairman is all about in NSRA. Southern Hospitability that is found mostly in the south. We baby our newcomers and make the adults take the responsibilities of everything else. Give us a try if you are looking for a show roller club. Remember the NSRA is there for you in the raising and showing of the Show Roller if you decide to give them a try. You never know, you just might enjoy show rollers and the guys and gals that raise them. I encourage you to hop on board and give show rollers a go.

CHAIRMAN Talk    DON HUMPHRESS  4-09
I was outside yesterday spreading a little fertilizer around the shrubs for the spring rains to wash into their roots for nourishment.  I saw a small garner snake coiled up in a circle looking back at me. Donald had already decided that the only good snake is a dead snake, and was killing garner snakes every time he saw one. Yesterday, Don was spreading the fertilizer and  that little snake got lucky when it looked up at him and didn't move or make an effort to slipper away, why Don just let the little snake lay there coiled up and when on about his business of getting the yard ready for spring. Which means folks, that these show rollers should be raising a baby or two before too long. If we get lucky and the creek don't rise.
The Classic show here in my hometown was another fun show for us guys who choose to attend this annual event. The NSRA co- hosts the NYBS, an all-age show in StateplaceAla and the Classic each year. Add the St.Louis show and you have got yourself a show roller series for the year.
Man, I am going to have to start writing these articles a lot sooner after the show because I am having a hard time relenting what took place. Anyway the show goes like this; I put the show up and the judging area. I bring a coffee pot and some soft drinks for our enjoyment. We have a meeting on Friday night and then we go out together and break bread at an eatery. In the past the guys would help me tear down and clean up but this year I had a country-regionplaceVietnam veteran help me clean up and put away the show coops for another year. Thanks guys for being generous with your money as you all blessed him. Jerry Arnett is his name and is pretty good guy, sometimes. He doesn't have a regular job so every little bit helps. My grandson who helped me set up and Scott also received some dough. OK enough of this kind of talk.
Jim Meeks didn't get to make this show this year but he was entered and was very much missed. Jim is really lucky, you should see his wife. Besides that he has had his share of medical problems and this year a big ice storm hit him and he had no electricity for another two weeks. Of course, on the Classic show date he was putting out heaters to prevent his water lines from freezing in the house. The fall before another wind storm put the juice out for two weeks too. Actually most of StateplaceKentucky got hit. God's country didn't get hit where I live.  I went up to Jim's place  after the show and his yard looked like a war zone. I mean the ground was cover up with tree limbs. He may get it clean up by sometime this summer. The northern guys said, if you got heat and electricity. Then, a foot of northern snow ain't nothing to drive in get to the show. They must think just being south from them puts KY in vacation land. Everyone must have gotten home after the show because I haven't heard that they didn't which is a good thing. You never know about StateplaceKentucky weather because it can get bad here especially in January. Hopefully our luck will continue to hold in the upcoming show years.
Getting back to Jim, the northern guys really missed him. You see, Jim usually brings adult beverages to drink. I didn't get any for them because they usually bring their own drinks. Nobody brings soft drinks, which I did. I even had orange and grape and diet coke for Ken. Ron, Allen and Ken came together and every space in their vehicle was pigeon occurred. Lucky for me we are moist in our town now and they quench their thirst at the local eatery.
Mike Underwood showed up both Friday and Saturday. I think he enjoyed himself. Seems he has had medical problems and Brenda his wife is in bad shape with her sugar. Mike said she couldn't see well enough to do anything which keeps him home close to care for her. We had a good catch up time and I know everybody was glad to see him. He should come back next year. We may have to get him to judge the Classic sometime as I may let him have a pair so he could be an active breeder again.
Speaking of judges I thought Jay Turner did an excellence job on the birds. He barely got by because he has gone into tumblers right now and some people think you must breed and show rollers in order to be a qualified show roller judge. Jay has raised some awful show rollers in his time. He should do well in any breed he puts his hands on. Jay is fun to be around and will be missed in the show roller circle. We will get to see him at CityplaceLouisville at the NYBS as that is a melting pot for pigeon people. Also I think it would be ok to put a plug in for this year's Classic show by announcing that by popular demand, soul searching and must expense. We have decided to let another outstanding Yankee be our judge. Master breeder and National Champion winner and always in the running for the top spot birds, William (Bill) (Doc) Koenig. He says he is coming without his main buddy, Dennis Barton. I for one don't even know how he will get here without Dennis, but I do believe in miracles. I very much look forward to spending some time with Doc because he always tells the funniest jokes. I can't wait to see him and Raymond Craft together, talk about some old stories.
Remember, it's your ten best young birds for an entry fee of one bill. Big to some and small to others. Top three guys take most of the money. Then all their birds are out and we fight for ten color classic coffee mugs and ten dollar each. You can win all of them if you have the color and the birds but don't count on it because there are some wonderful young birds shown each time we get together. Plus it's a funniest show, really laid back, over around lunch, and it's in the heart of StateplaceKentucky. Jim Davidson showed this year and said he loved it and that he is coming back and he is getting some mean birds. Its high drama found beginning to end and leaves a good taste in your mouth.
The winners and the show report have already been put out so I won't say anything about that. I will only say that the winners sure where fine. We had a meeting and the minutes should be in this bulletin. I can't remember what we did but Ken is like an elephant and doesn't forget anything. So we elected him a director to help keep us straight and on track which we need. Anyway, Roger Toney has stepped up for the club to be the editor. From the looks of his first issue he must have taken notes from Jim Meeks. The new kid on the block is Lori Rill. Her husband Tony isn't a bad guy either. Lori, I like story tellers so feel free to tell stories. I forgot the word you used but it was a good one.  You were much to kind. Anyway we need fresh perspective and ideas coming from our show roller people. Actually I look forward to reading her comments and observations of the hobby. They got some good stock birds so I really do look for them to break out in the shows this year. Besides Ken and Lori and Roger I can't think of any others we elected. Remember this, you don't have to be an elected official or not pay your taxes in order to write something for the bulletin. Free will to write anything and everything and send it to Roger for publication so we all can enjoy what you write.
I am winding down right now. I must go clean up and take my wife out on a date. Which is a meal out and go look at artist's paintings downtown. She has five painting in it and it is a culture thing for the area. Most show roller people like culture stuff, right? Plus it's for Relay for Life fundraiser.
I got a letter from Robbie Valeck. He is member of the Florence Crane Correctional Facility. I think he got caught stealing show rollers at a show. Anyway they are trying to correct his behavior and he sounds like a really nice convict now. See Robbie I told you I would be thinking of you. All this is just in fun and we can either laugh or cry at your situation. I chose to laugh. Anyway it seems that Robbie has found that he has a lot of time on his hands right now. He is a member of the club and we don't discriminate in this club. Having said that I am hoping that Robbie will write something for the bulletin and maybe some of us can keep in touch with him. He is a pretty fair artist and has modeled a couple of show rollers out of clay that I thought where pretty good to display. Maybe we could put a couple of your drawings in the bulletin, Robbie. The ball is in your park and I hope you didn't mind me saying these things. I know Jim Meeks and Ron Simpson have contacted Robbie.
Everybody stay healthy and don't give up on the show rollers just yet. Warm weather will definitely help us and you know the Classic is always the last weekend in January. So you can show them late hatches at the Classic. I am out of here till next time. Maybe I will have something interesting next time. I may have to start making up stories again…
North East Director
Hi Folks…….
      I got another brainstorm………………….hold on!
How would the membership feel about a competition for writing articles.  We are in this hobby for the competition after all, why not ……….
“take it up a notch…..” .  It would be once a year award and maybe even a plaque presented at the National Show. The prize could be a plaque, 2 year membership, bands……….whatever. The judges could be board members, people not writing articles for whatever “good” reason, or members who are all “articled out”.  It could get people writing more articles if the right incentive is offered.  We all know how difficult it is to get articles to fill our publications. We could make the guidelines whatever we wanted……………..……Most articles, best article, most valuable writer, most popular writer, there are many options.  We wouldn't even have to limit it to one award.  It's something to consider, easy to put into action, low expenditure and if it gets more people writing…… Wunderbar!.
Writing for 2 bulletins sure isn't easy. I forget which one I've sent to which bulletin sometimes. I finally had to make files to keep it all organized, so in case I forget,  I'll have backup. I always try and change my articles a little, so they are not exactly the same things being repeated over and over. Everyone with suggestions, ideas or questions should contact ANY director.  We can throw it out there if it is applicable and see what the reactions are.  As everyone who has ever written articles can tell you, the stream of ideas and thoughts do not take much time to run dry.  It's difficult to think of new things to write about. There isn't anything wrong with some healthy controversial discussions. When I throw out an idea or suggestion to the membership, I want it to create a discussion. In all of my articles where I make a suggestion or  some “Food for Thought” ,  I expect for these to be controversial sometimes. But. they are just what they are………..ideas and are not written in stone.”  These ideas are not rigid and are very open to modifications and alterations.
If nothing comes of them, I won't be offended…………I  have at least tried.
Lori
Always JMHO
Life is too short not to laugh as much as you can…
Well……………It's 3/24/09 and we have 8 pair set up and no babies so far.
I think we are going to try running some amoxicillin powder through the entire loft.  Our birds are wormed (prior to the breeding season) and they get Pigeon Builder®, Winsmore® along with a probiotic, fresh water and good feed.  What more do they want?
Some breeders have been discussing infertility being due to a possible low grade infection. Therefore the ammoxi powder, as it seems that our chosen breed of pigeons will use just any reason to give us grief.  I guess it's just a process of elimination to find what will work for us.
There are some good discussions on the USRCA message board at Yahoo Groups.  John Geiger is doing a good job moderating. Old hen infertility was a recent topic. You can get to the board via the USCRA website. It is an excellent opportunity to keep in touch with the hobby between Bulletins. If you all have a chance, check it out and comment. There can never be too much input or output. Everyone's opinion matters, there are no stupid questions and the hobby needs the support.  stocktickerPLUS………We all like to talk pigeons, don't we?
Actually, I did put up a 9th pair today…….a yellow hen.  Thanks Jim.   I set her up in one of Tony's fly bird cages he vacated to use one of the new kit cages he got for Christmas.  We seem to be heading more and more toward the dilute factor here. Half the birds we have set up are dilutes, or some variation carrying dilute. My very first Show Roller was a true Silver Red Bar from Charlie. Maybe that is why the color is my favorite to this day. Color is not a top priority when we keep a bird, but if there is a good bird and it is the color we like….. it's a given that it will be coming home with us if available. In the end…..we have to like what we keep……. to look at and to breed. Conditioning is the top priority. Birds that do not hold weight or don't carry good weight living under our conditions, no matter how good they are, don't stay very long. Had to get really hardcore and prioritize what it is we are looking for and what we want to accomplish. We cannot be a numbers breeder. We just do not have the room for it. Quality vs. Quantity has to be the motto for us.   Quantity is self explanatory. Quality means different things to different people. What it means to us is that the bird is a producer,  sits tight,  feeds its' own and is an easy keeper.
 Sounds simple ………………….HA!   HA!   HA!
We are moving toward one of those goals, as most of the birds we have now carry decent weight year round. Overall, the ones we've bred carry better weight than most of the breeders we've bred from. It's a step in the right direction.
Talked to Greg Sherman the other day and he has some young already….lucky dog. He is a small breeder and is doing well.  Kudos! He mentioned that some of the Baldhead breeders and he have been talking about having a lawn show here on the east coast. There are some really good baldhead breeders over here. I think it is a very good idea as it could stir up some action and maybe even pull in some new blood. If there is a breed specific show, even a lawn show, people are interested.  Look at how large the lawn show has gotten in the placeMidwest.
Speaking of Baldheads…..I forgot to mention meeting Walter, who of course has Baldheads. He had some very nice looking birds and I know he is always looking to improve his line, as we all are. There aren't many Show Roller breeders here on the East Coast. I wish we had been around when the Show Roller had big entries and there were lots of big shows here in the east.
If wishes were pennies ………………………………………………………………………
I'd have ………………………………………………………………
!MORE PIGEONS!

It seems it gets harder and harder to try to come up with something for the newsletter each year. Not a lot of news from my area and it seems, as we get older there is less news each year. I talked to Ray Timmons awhile back and he is off and running with a few early birds and likes what he has raised this year. Larry Malon also got an early start and he has some that are old enough to look at. Jim Davidson has more banded that anyone I have talked to so far this year.
Ken and Allen came for a visit last month and Allen had a few banded when he was here and I bet he is off and running by now. Ken was slow getting his birds together and the last time I talked to him he was about ready to check a few eggs. Both Ken and Allen picked up a few birds while they were here that I hope do them both some good this year.
Fred Williams called they other day and said he was thinking about getting out of the birds but James Thompson talked him into staying in them. I also talked to Barry Jennings a month or so ago and he is putting more pair together this year than I can ever remember him doing in the past and if he does he will certainly be a force to recon with at the shows this year.
I had about 16 birds left over this year and Clark Hutchinson, Boyd Holbrook, Kelli Alder, and Mac Stephenson all went together and bought them. They had a get together at placeClarks house and did some sort of drawing to see who got what. There were some good birds in that batch so I hope they will be able to raise some good ones out of them.
Eldon called a few days ago and said he was still having some health problems but things were looking up and he was optimistic that he was getting better. He said John Putney had a few of his birds and they had raised some blacks last year that they both really liked. I did hear that Steve Olsen is back into Show Rollers again and that is good because I am sure he will hopefully get some shows going again down around the StateplaceFlorida area.
Bad news is that my Friend Sean Mueller got out of the Show Rollers. I also got a nice e-mail from Aaron Stanfill the other day and Aaron is going to take over as Bulletin editor for the Southwest Roller Club. The SRC is alive and well and if anyone wants any info as to how to join this club just let me know. They still put out a very informative newsletter. I talked to Denny Lane awhile back and he was just starting to mate up and he said he really liked some of the birds I sent him this year and he thinks if all goes well he will have a good year. I sure would like to see Denny  show more and maybe judge a few shows.
Speaking of Shows, I would love to get some show dates from some of you guys so I can send them to Steve Johnson so he can update the USRCA web site. The only shows I know of right now are Sept.26th. Is the BSRC Lawn Show at Bob Faulkner's, Oct. 31st. NYBS Louisville, Ky., Nov.28th. BSRC Annual at CityplaceHartford City, StateInd., Jan.9th. MRC Annual at St.Louis, and Jan. 31st. is the NSRA Classic in CityplaceCampbellsville, StateKy. I need to find out the date of the NSRA annual, CityWatertown show, CityRichmond show, StateUtah show, DeMoines show, this years National show, CityTopeka show, and CityplaceFremont show. I may have left a few out so please get me or John Geiger your show dates and we will get these to Steve.

Also any past show reports that should be listed on the web site too. I do know that the Yahoo Show Roller group is active again so if you have not signed up you can let John Geiger know and he can make you a member. This is a great way to
share ideas and ask questions. This is about all the news that I can come up with at this time. I hope everyone has a great breeding season.

Southern Director's Report - Marion Helton

It's the first week of April, and the birds are finally starting to get interested in the breeding season.  We had an unusually cold and wet March and first week of April this year.  I think this slowed the breeders down a little.  Most of my pairs for this year were put together after the Classic show, and some toward the end of February.  I now have a total of 42 pair mated as of this writing.  The majority of my matings are young bird to young bird, and, consequently, there were many infertile eggs.  A few pair do not have any fertile eggs yet.  At this time I have about 30 babies and about that many fertile eggs.  That is not really that many for the number of pairs I have mated.  It wasn't real important for me to get off to a fast start this year since I am judging the Young Bird Show.  I will go a little longer this year if I have to.  I don't have any old enough to get a feel for the quality yet.

I will try to have some pictures of young birds for the next bulletin.  I don't have any old enough this time.  Most of the other guys I've talked to are off to a slow start also.  However, the last time I talked to them, things were looking up.  Jim Davidson says he has over 60 babies.  Jim raised some really good ones last year, and should do even better this year.  He has some real good breeding stock this year.

Last year was my best year ever with my birds.  With the breeding stock I acquired a while back and the birds I have raised over the last 3 or 4 years, I raised some really nice young birds.  That is the reason I had so many young birds together in my breeding program.  If I am fortunate enough to keep the trend going with my young birds, I should be ok this year.  I think the quality of birds raised by everyone was much better last year.  The shows were real competitive.  If you had a bird to place high in its class, it was probably a very nice bird.  In some of the classes at the National I would have been real happy to breed from the top 8 or 10 birds.

After this round I plan to break up certain pairs of birds and re-mate them.  Not because I don't like the mating, but I want to get them with other birds to spread the genes around on certain birds.  As some of you know, I don't like to mate back to parents, so, I do a lot of cousins to cousins, niece to uncle, and sometimes half brother and sister.  I think the way to get better faster is to mate your best young birds together.  If your young are not better than parents, you are going the wrong way anyway.  If most of your young are better than parents each year, you should be very successful.

There is not a lot to talk about this time, but maybe next time we will have more young birds to talk about and some pictures.  Hope everyone is having a good start to their breeding season and raise some really good ones.  I am looking forward to seeing all of you at the shows.  I guess the first get-together will be the lawn show at Bob's place.  James and I are planning on being there.  Last year we were planning on going up until the evening before we were to leave.  James' wife, Opal, fell and broke her shoulder, and we could not go.  We really were looking forward to going.  Hope to see all of you later.
                                             Marion

Director's Report:  Ken Paxton

Well, Don appointed me as an NSRA director during our meeting in Campbellsville and I will do a better job than most of Don's former appointees (and no doubt some of his current appointees).  By better, I mean that I will provide reports although there is precious little to report at certain times of the year; this being one of those times.  However, I always got something to Jim Meeks whenever he asked and I will try to do the same for Roger.

The 2008 show season was a very good one and it was capped off with two signature shows hosted by the NSRA; the National in St. Louis and the Classic in Campbellsville.  We have never had a roller show with the quality of awards the NSRA presented in St. Louis and if was made more special by Sam winning National Champion with his red grizzle young cock.  This is a beautiful pigeon and congratulations to Sam!  Also, congratulations to Ron Simpson for winning the Classic again this year.

The breeding season should be well underway for most of us but from what I've heard it has not started well for many of us.  As of today (April 10th) I have had 4 fertile eggs, 2 of which have hatched and are alive, but are not yet banded.  We all know their survival is anything but guaranteed at this point.  Nearly all of my 25 pair have recently layed or relayed and this round should produce more fertile eggs and thence young.  Same old problems with fertility, cocks not sitting, etc. and this really is no surprise anymore.  I still get a tinge of disappointment when I candle a set of eggs and see no fertility but I have come to accept it and it doesn't ruin my day as it used to.  The fact is, I really have trouble getting enthusiastic about the birds at all until it warms up.  We're close to getting warm but it will still be a few weeks until StateplaceOhio has good roller breeding weather.

The BSRC held its annual meeting at Bob Faulkner's home on March 28th.  The date for this year's lawn show is September 26th and will again be hosted by Bob.  We hope to see many of you again this year.  We are also hosting a USRCA point show in Hartford City, IN on Thanksgiving weekend.  We have asked Gary Manning to judge and he has said he will if he can get time from work.  If Gary cannot, we have Jim Davidson in reserve and he has agreed to do the job.  This will not be a particularly large show, but we think it is important to keep one of the few Midwest clubs still hosting shows in that business.  The date is a relatively open date with a couple of weeks between other shows and we hope to see a few of you attend this year.

The MRC Annual will be in St. Louis this year (the National is on the west coast) and should again be the largest show in the country.  Allen Brock and either Jim Meeks or Don Humphress will judge this year.  The date is date  January 9, 2010 and we expect to see another large turnout for this great show.

Best of luck with your 2009 breeding season.  Ken

Hey Folks,
Hope everyone has had a good and safe Easter holiday this year. The young bird on the cover of the bulletin belongs to Ray Timmons. It sounds like he getting things together.
Well, I'm so glad to see all the tree and plants coming to life again. That mean warm weather coming, Thank God, because I getting sick of snow.ice, and cold days. I'm ready to get these Show Rollers whistling Dixie Again! .Ha Ha ! So far I got 2 youngest this year, but look at the bright side of it all, that's less birds I have to feed, and cull out at the end of the year. If I raise 20 a year, I'm good. I don't have to raise a 100 to get the job done.
I've talked to some folks in the past months that are getting out of show rollers. I ask why are you  getting out of show rollers?. The answer's I got are the same; they said that they are too hard to raise them. I answer , so are other breeds, but it doesn't stop the breed of bird or keep me from enjoying the hobby.. You just have to work at it. In other words, There Are No Free Lunches. So, you will have to do so work.
Now I have flying rollers, these guys breed very fast, too fast. But the hawks eat them fast around here too. So it still works out the same. Raise 75 flying rollers, the hawk eats 60-75% of them you have about 15-20 birds left.Show rollers you raise 15-30, cull out 30-40%, that about 15-20 birds left. So what's the big deal of hard to raise show rollers? Do get me wrong, I like both breeds, and I have both. I just don't understand the folk who get in this hobby and expect to become millionaire in 1-2 years. It's a hobby, not the lottery.
Well, I was hoping to hear from some of you who may have gotten a new person involved in the hobby. I haven't heard from anyone, but this is the slow time of the year for us.
My youngest son (Matthew) has a friend that comes to our house and the first thing that Matthew does is go out to the pigeon loft to show his buddy the pigeons. Well, this little guy when home and told his mommy what he saw and like about pigeons. Chris is his name, but his mom started asking me about the pigeons, all kinds of questions. I told her of the club in my area (DRA) we have meeting, shows, flying events etc.. Things that get the kid involved with something other then TV games. She liked what she heard so much that they are going to make some space in their yard for some birds. When I told her about the fertilizer, she was really sold on them then. I got 2 extract points for that guys! Ha-Ha !!
Well, that's it for this time . Don't forget , that we still have a FREE Classified Section to those who need it.
